Bias Indicators

This study isn’t published yet, so I don’t want to go into too much detail here, but we tested 6 different indicator designs on short, social media-like statements. Each group saw only one type of indicator, adapted to 9 statements with varying bias levels and political leanings. Afterwards, participants completed a bias detection task with 6 new statements. We found that bias highlights (1) had a significant effect, increasing bias detection. A bias gauge (5) had similar effects, while a trust indicator (4, commonly used online) showed minimal effects. However, political leaning—and particularly having the same leaning as a statement—had the biggest impact.

All 6 tested indicators.
